Percy Jackson and the Olympians: The Lightning Thief, Rick Riordan

Beka and I have been looking for more novels to read together. It's become one of our favorite past times. Even our daughter Lillian will sit and stare at us as we read of adventures and conquests. I so wish that I had gotten into reading at a much earlier age.
We had seen the previews of this book being made into a movie and decided it would be worth checking into. Found out it was a series and gave it a go.
Growing up I was always enthralled with Greek Mythology. Zeus, Posiden, Ares, Aphrodites, all drew me in to the idea of Good vs Evil, selfishness vs Selflessness, mankind outwitting even the most powerful forces ever known.
So, in the first installment of Percy Jackson and the olympians we are thrown into a outlook of what and where present day greek god's do and reside. The idea that Western civilization is birthed wherever Mount Olympus resides. That gods still engage with humans and have children with them. That Heroes continue to go on quests, and selfish, brooding gods continue to fight amongst themselves.
In the mist of all this we have a young kid named Percy Jackson who finds out he is the son of Posiden. By the age of 12 he is inducted into a summer camp for demigods and is given a quest to find Zeus's stolen "Master Bolt". Along with other Demigods and mythological creatures he sets out across America encountering all sorts of legendary monsters only found in the best works of Homer.
As far as the overall story, there was plenty of humor. The author's idea of what Olympus god's would be like in the modern world is intriguing. As far as the movie in contrast to the book, I unfortunately would not be able to tell you. The movie never came to our town. I do look forward to seeing it though. As far as just in basic previews I've noticed a few discrepancies. The actor playing Percy is much older than 12. As well as all the other Demigod characters. Other than that, i can't pull much from trailers.
We have decided to continue reading about Percy Jackson in the rest of the series and will bring more reviews on the 4 other books in which he appears.
I give the book a 8 out of 10.
Until next time
